The Tie-Dye Supply List I Wish I'd Had When I Started

There is no shortage of fiber reactive tie-dye supplies lists on the internet. Most of them were written by someone who bought a kit once. This one wasn't.

Everything on this list is something I've actually used. A lot of it replaced something else I tried first. The squeeze bottles replaced bigger bottles. The smaller tips replaced the standard ones. The beakers replaced guesswork. Every item here earned its spot through actual use, not because it showed up in a search result. Quick note: Some of these links are affiliate links. A penny here and there doesn't hurt, but that's not the point.

Squeeze Bottles and Tips

This is where most people get it wrong first. The big bottles feel intuitive. More dye, more control. In practice they're clunky, they apply too much dye at once, and you lose precision on anything requiring detail work.

I went smaller. Then smaller again. The tip size matters as much as the bottle. A fine tip gives you a line. A wide tip gives you a flood. Knowing when you want each one is half the craft. I keep several sizes on the bench at once depending on what the fold calls for.


Fiber Reactive Tie-Dye Supplies: Dye and Chemistry

Fiber reactive dye isn't complicated but it does require a few things done right. There are chemicals I buy in bulk because I go through them constantly. Soda ash and urea are the two core ones. Beyond those, there are a few others, sodium alginate for thickening, and other additives depending on what the work calls for.

What I will say is that the chemistry is not guesswork. Every element has a reason and a function. Get the core chemicals right and you're most of the way there. The rest you'll develop over time, or you can watch The Framework and skip that part too.


Measuring and Mixing

Beakers. A decent scale. Measuring spoons that stay dedicated to dye work and never go back in the kitchen drawer.

Whether you measure by weight or volume, be precise and be consistent. The difference between a quarter teaspoon and a half teaspoon of dye powder in the same volume of water is a completely different result on fabric. You can't eyeball it and get repeatable results. Measure everything, take notes.


Tying and Resist

No rubber bands. Everything I tie is hard bound with sinew, 60 pound braid, bowstring, or some variant of waxed cord depending on what the fold needs. The resist is not decoration. It's architecture. It determines where the dye goes and where it doesn't.

Different cord materials produce different edges and different amounts of bleed. Learning what each one does to the fiber under pressure is part of developing your own vocabulary. You can research this yourself for a while, or you can start with what's in the storefront and build from there.
